In these uncertain times, getting outdoors and being active is crucial to mental and physical health. We at 100 Alabama Miles Challenge encourage everyone to practice smart, safe distancing while enjoying the outdoor amenities in our state.
Alabama is fortunate to have some of the best rock climbing and bouldering spots in the entire country. If you’re able and close to one of these areas, here are four of our top rock climbing destinations in our beautiful state.
Horse Pens 40
Located a short distance outside of Birmingham, Horse Pens 40 is one of the premier climbing destinations in the country. Not only does it have hundreds of bouldering problems to keep you challenged, but it also has a campground, cabins, a store, and a restaurant (to come back and visit after social distancing is over, of course). Primitive camping is currently still available and is a fun way to spend a weekend with your housemates.
Moss Rock Preserve
Birmingham is fortunate to have so many great outdoor opportunities right out its back door, including Moss Rock Preserve. Even though Moss Rock is nestled right at the edge of different neighborhoods in Hoover, it has a popular boulder field known throughout the Southeast, with over 50 bouldering problems of varying difficulties. Additionally, there are 12 miles of singletrack trail throughout the Preserve, perfect for running or hiking after a good climbing session.
Cherokee Rock Village
Known as Sand Rock within the climbing community, Cherokee Rock Village has turned into a destination for all types of climbers. Located in Centre, AL, it features trad and sport climbing, as well as bouldering. And because Sand Rock is so spacious, it has plenty of room to climb while practicing safe social distancing away from other climbers.
Yellow Bluff
Yellow Bluff is the place to climb in North Alabama, now that it’s Southeast Climbers’ Coalition (SCC) property and open for climbing again. Reaching up almost 1,500 feet, Yellow Bluff offers over 70 sport climbs ranging in difficulty. There is also trad climbing, as well as bouldering, making this Huntsville spot a true climbing destination.
